guguletu project
This project offers young people in Guguletu an opportunity to learn about the rich culture and hierarchy of Goju Kai karate plus all the benefits of discipline, exercise and a healthy lifestyle. The children that are attracted into the dojo are often playing in the street until 10 o'clock in the evening and hence being able to train and learn about karate is an alternative to the options that are offered in their current environment. When a student elects to come and train at the dojo, it is their choice - it is about what is inside that person. This dedication to training coupled with what Goju Kai can offer, a student can learn about commitment, choice, loyalty and honor through an ancient system.
The commitment shown by the children who started at the Guguletu project is evident by their progress going up the ranks. A number of students have succeeded in earning their Brown Belts (3rd Kyu) and have been transferred to the hombu Dojo in Mowbray to further their training. Two students recently achieved their dream of grading for their black belts in Japan under some of the highest graded Japanese instructors in the world.
Under the guidance of Sensei Frank Brandon the senior instructor at the Guguletu project, is the resident instructor Xholsile Hiti - an Uchi Deshi who has moved through the ranks and earned his position as an internationally recognized instructor. His commitment to this program is evident by the number of students who are being attracted into the dojo.
The Goju Kai community internationally has saluted the program and welcomed our students when touring abroad. Sensei Frank Brandon has described his involvement with the Guguletu project as being: "What a journey, to see it and live it with my students is humbling and amazing."
